In a previous post, we discussed the fact that you can also opt to order a kit that comes with all the necessary parts to build your patio cover. These patio cover kits can save you a lot of time and hassle in figuring out materials. If you know that you are only looking for a fairly simple style of patio cover, then this is for you.
Most times, as discussed, these are pergolas. If you are unfamiliar with a pergola, it is simply a structure with four posts and a flat 'roof' made of beams and several cross member pieces that create a type of criss-cross or lattice-type roof. These are often made of wood, but can be found in vinyl-plastic or sometimes have metal roofs. The type of wood varies and some manufacturers offer different types of woods - cedar, redwood, etc. - based upon your specifications. If you want a metal roof option, you may need to go about getting a custom patio cover kit.

Choosing Patio Covers For Your Backyard
If it is simply a way to cover your patio furniture, then I wouldn't bother investing too much time or effort in searching online for the best patio cover designs. For obvious reasons, the only time to invest your money or energy into a patio cover is if you are going to be enjoying your time outdoors. Some people use this for having an outdoor room, like an extension of their home. These are becoming more and more popular with the 'invention' of appliances that can be built into your outdoor patio space.
The right plans for your covered patio will make all the difference. Once you figure out how you will be using your patio, the design can be easier to fulfill. A good architect or builder can help you in this process. If you are not looking for such a custom job, patio covers also come as kits that you can buy. These are more often a pergola style, the most common type of cover structure.

Metal Patio Covers
Since wood is the most common and readily available building material, you will find that most patio covers are built from wood. The same is true of the roof. However, metal patio covers are making a bigger comeback due to a variety of environmental, sustainability, and just hip-ness factors.
Metal is a sustainable product because of the fact that it lasts. Metal roofs that have been installed on barns and other outdoor structures on farms or other buildings are still functional and around decades later. You can't say that about a traditional roof or even tile roof sometimes.
The other factor that makes metal patio covers so unique is that they will patina to a nice rustic look if left to the elements. This means that a light rusting or other color depending upon your metal - copper, bronze, etc. - will add an elegant and aged appearance to your patio structure.

Patio Covers And More...
When you think about what patio covers are, they are really just wood, metal, maybe some awnings, other fabrics, hardware, screws, etc. But, if you think about what they really are, you'll find much more. See, when you have a patio to enjoy, you learn the meaning of life.
Yes, you read that right - the meaning of life. How can you possibly learn 'why we are here' or 'who we are' from having your patio covered? It is all in the meaning behind the meaning. It's like this. We really don't want money because we love special fabric paper that has unique holograms and colored ink. Nope. We want it for what it gives us. In most cases, money gives us some type of feeling. Sometimes, it is a feeling of freedom. Well, this can be yours just by sitting under your covered patio and wondering about the other big questions in life.
You probably don't do enough of this in your regular life. You know the one I mean, 'the grind', the '9 to 5' the 'rat race.' It goes by many names, but not many people call it their meaning of life. Sadly. But it is true. It is the place that most of us spend 5 days a week and only have 2 wimpy days of rest. Let's start taking advantage of those 2 days - get out on your patio!
